A Reflection on Building Lasting Organizational Performance
One question has stayed with me throughout my consulting career.
Why do some organizations continue to grow stronger after achieving major milestones, while others slowly lose momentum?
Both may have excellent leadership.
Both may have talented people.
Both may have developed thoughtful strategic plans.
Both may have invested heavily in improvement.
Yet, over time, one organization continues to build upon its success while another
gradually drifts away from the very practices that helped it succeed.
After many years of working with organizations across the public, private and not-for-
profit sectors, I’ve come to believe the difference often lies in three simple—but powerful—leadership disciplines.
Establish. Execute. Sustain.
Not as a slogan.
As a way of thinking about organizational leadership.
Establish
Every successful organization begins with a strong foundation.
That foundation includes:
• Clear purpose.
• Effective governance.
• Thoughtful strategy.
• Leadership alignment.
• An understanding of risk.
• Meaningful performance measures.
Without these elements, even the most ambitious plans struggle to gain traction.
Organizations rarely fall short because they lack good intentions.
More often, they simply haven’t built the foundation needed to support long-term
success.
Execute
A strategy sitting on a shelf has never changed an organization.
Execution is where leadership becomes visible.
It is reflected in:
• Decisions.
• Processes.
• Communication.
• Accountability.
• Culture.
Over the past several years, much of my work has focused on what I describe as the
Strategy–Execution Bridge™—helping organizations connect strategic intent with
day-to-day operational reality.
Because strategy creates value only when people experience it every day.
Sustain
Perhaps the most overlooked leadership discipline is sustaining success.
Organizations evolve.
Leaders retire.
Priorities change.
Technology advances.
New risks emerge.
Success is never permanent.
It requires continual attention, reflection and renewal.
That doesn’t always mean developing another strategic plan.
Sometimes it simply means asking better questions.
• Are we still leading as we intended?
• Are our governance practices still effective?
• Have new risks emerged?
• Is our culture evolving in the right direction?
• Are we preparing for what’s next—not simply celebrating what we’ve already
achieved?
A Leadership Philosophy
As I reflect on the organizations I’ve had the privilege to support, I realize that this
simple philosophy has gradually become the foundation of my own advisory work.
Not because every organization follows the same framework.
But because every successful organization ultimately faces the same journey, they
must:
Establish.
Execute.
Sustain.
The frameworks may differ.
The journey does not.
Whether an organization is strengthening governance, implementing a strategic plan,
pursuing accreditation, improving operational performance or preparing for its next
stage of growth, these three leadership disciplines remain remarkably consistent.
Because organizational performance is never a destination.
It is a leadership discipline.
Over the coming months, I’ll be sharing additional reflections on each of these
leadership disciplines and how they can help organizations build lasting performance in
an increasingly complex world.
